Tesla vs. Apple CarPlayTesla vs. Apple CarPlay

Many Tesla owners wish for Apple CarPlay support. But Tesla hasn’t added it yet. Why? Let’s explore this and see how one developer hacked it into his Tesla.

Why Doesn’t Tesla Support Apple CarPlay?

Tesla chooses its own path with software. They don’t use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Instead, they build their own custom infotainment system.

This means no CarPlay or Android Auto. Tesla also doesn’t officially support Apple Music. Their system has Google Maps-based navigation and Spotify integration. But it lacks flexibility and app support.

CarPlay brings your iPhone into the car. It lets you navigate, message, call, stream music, and control smart home devices with Siri. Many Apple users miss this feature in Tesla.

Tesla’s Ecosystem: Strengths and Shortcomings

Tesla’s navigation is excellent. It plans your route with charging stops. Spotify integration is also smooth.

But there are limits.

  • No WhatsApp integration or Siri support for messaging
  • No Apple Music (officially)
  • No HomeKit controls
  • No speed camera alerts
  • Some features hidden behind the Premium Connectivity paywall

For Apple users, this lack of support is a step back.

The Workaround: CarPlay in a Tesla (Yes, Really)

Michał Gapiński, a Polish Tesla Model 3 owner, found a solution. He built a system using a Raspberry Pi running Android. It streams Apple CarPlay through the Tesla’s browser.

This setup needs some tech skills and a good Wi-Fi connection. But it gives full CarPlay features like Apple Maps and Apple Music.

Gapiński also made Tesla’s steering wheel controls work with CarPlay. This makes interacting with the system easier.

There’s some lag in the video stream. But Gapiński is working to improve it. He plans to share this workaround with other Tesla drivers soon.

Will Tesla Ever Embrace CarPlay?

It seems unlikely for now. Tesla wants to control its software. They haven’t added Apple CarPlay or Android Auto yet. Even Apple Music support has been slow.

Meanwhile, BMW, Porsche, and Lucid offer full CarPlay integration. They even have features like synced Apple Music lyrics and Podcast support.

Tesla’s approach is unique. But it’s not always good.

Final Thoughts

Tesla’s system is strong and made for Tesla, but it misses the mark for many users. They want more flexibility, especially if they use Apple products. Michał Gapiński’s project proves that CarPlay can work in a Tesla, even without Tesla’s help.

It’s unclear if Tesla will ever support CarPlay. But the EV community keeps the dream alive with their DIY efforts.
